From Job Security to Artistic Freedom: My Pandemic Story
Embracing Change: How the Pandemic Transformed My Artistic Journey
If you're a performer feeling stuck or at a crossroads, you're in the right place. I'm going to share how the pandemic compelled me to pursue my artistic dreams and redefine success on my own terms as a musical theatre artist. As someone dedicated to helping actors and musical theater performers navigate this industry, I'm excited to share my personal journey with you.
The Turning Point of 2020
The year 2020 brought our industry to a standstill, reminiscent of the challenges faced during the 2008 financial crisis. However, the critical distinction was that 2020 forced everyone to make a choice. Many decided to pursue different paths for various reasons, ranging from starting families to exploring new career avenues.
My Personal Struggle
Before 2020, I wore my hectic schedule like a badge of honor. Balancing performances, teaching, and directing, I was spread thin, but I wore a façade of contentment. Little did others know, I was exhausted and discontented within. This struggle was not unique to me; my husband, also a musical theater professional, shared similar sentiments.
Hitting the Pause Button
The pandemic-induced hiatus prompted a reevaluation of my priorities. With the luxury of working from home, having transitioned my studio online, I delved into activities that brought me joy: cooking, playing music, and cultivating daily habits like reading and journaling.
Embracing Change
One major hurdle in my transformation was the fear of consistency, as every day seemed monotonously predictable. Our industry thrives on unpredictability, and I refused to succumb to a conventional nine-to-five routine. I asked myself, "What's holding me back from living my dream life and career?"
Letting Go of Societal Expectations
The answer was clear: societal expectations. The pressure to conform to conventional norms, especially for a woman of a certain age, weighed heavily on me. However, I resolved to let go of these expectations and forge a path that resonated with my true desires.
Navigating the Unknown
Choosing this path came with its challenges. Comments and questions from others about my unconventional choices became commonplace. However, I learned to prioritize my happiness over explaining myself to others. This journey was about me and the fulfillment I sought in my life and career.
Manifesting My Dream Life
Taking the risk to live life on my terms was liberating. It meant facing uncertainties and potential financial fluctuations, but I was willing to take that chance. I refused to let regret define my journey, knowing that I was pursuing what truly brought me joy.
The pandemic afforded me the space to introspect and create a life aligned with my aspirations. It taught me that I could navigate challenges, make sacrifices, and still manifest my dream life. I share this story in the hopes of inspiring fellow artists to embrace change and pursue their own definitions of success.
